Purple Gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb. et Zucc. (family Boraginaceae) has been used traditionally as medicine in China, and as a dye for staining fabrics and food colorants. It has been cultivated in China, Korea, and other Asian countries. Shikonin and its naphthoquinone derivatives have been proved to be the active components that possess a wide spectrum of wound-healing, antitumor, antifungal, antiHIV, antioxidant, and contraceptive activities (Han et al., 2008). The successful production of shikonin derivatives on a large scale from the cell, tissue, and hairy root (transgenic root) cultures of L. erythrorhizon has been achieved (Papageorgiou et al., 1999; Syklowska-Baranek et al., 2012).
